The United States has imposed sanctions on former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila, accusing him of supporting armed groups operating in the country’s eastern region.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Kabila has been added to the sanctions list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) over his alleged role in contributing to instability, including links to groups such as M23 and the Congo River Alliance (AFC).
The sanctions include the freezing of any assets under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit American individuals or entities from engaging in transactions with him.
Washington says the move is part of efforts to hold accountable those accused of fueling violence in eastern DRC, a region that has faced prolonged conflict and humanitarian crises.
