Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali Dies at 87, Bringing an End to Five Decades of Public Service

KAMPALA — Retired General Moses Ali, one of Uganda's most recognizable military commanders and longest-serving political leaders, has died aged 87.

Ali passed away on Saturday at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala after battling illness, family members and close associates confirmed. He had been receiving specialized treatment for several weeks, having earlier been admitted to the Uganda Heart Institute before being transferred to Nakasero Hospital.

His death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned more than five decades and placed him at the centre of some of Uganda's most significant political and military developments.

Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Ali first gained national prominence during the 1970s before becoming leader of the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) following the fall of Idi Amin's government. In 1988, he signed a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni's government, paving the way for the integration of his forces into the national army and his return to public service.

He went on to serve in several senior government positions, including First Deputy Prime Minister, Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament. Throughout his career, he remained a key political figure in the West Nile sub-region and was widely regarded as an influential voice in government.

Ali represented Adjumani West County in Parliament for many years and retained the seat in the 2026 General Election despite concerns over his health, demonstrating his enduring political support in the constituency.

Leaders from across Uganda have begun mourning the veteran statesman, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose influence stretched across generations. His contributions to peacebuilding, reconciliation and development in northern Uganda have been widely acknowledged.

The government is expected to announce details of official funeral arrangements, with a state funeral anticipated in recognition of his long service to the country.

Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali is survived by his family, while burial arrangements are expected to be announced after consultations between the family and government.
