The Democratic Republic of the Congo is advancing a major $1.258 billion railway modernization project covering the strategic Dilolo–Sakania line.
The project would rehabilitate and modernize 1,004.5 kilometres of railway running through major economic centres including Kolwezi and Lubumbashi, connecting the Grand Katanga mining region with Angola’s Lobito Corridor and Atlantic coast.
Angolan President João Lourenço arrived in Kinshasa on August 26 to join President Félix Tshisekedi at a planned contract-signing ceremony linked to the project.
The proposed partnership with Mota-Engil Africa covers financing, rehabilitation, modernization, commercial operation and maintenance of the railway.
Once developed, railway capacity is expected to progressively increase to as much as 13.7 million tonnes annually, potentially strengthening mineral exports, regional trade and logistics between the DRC, Angola and Zambia
