Veteran Politician Miria Matembe Granted Bail in High-Profile Sectarianism Case

Former minister and veteran political figure Miria Matembe has been granted a cash bail of Shs3 million after appearing before court today in a case that has attracted nationwide attention.

Matembe, who previously served as Uganda’s Minister of Ethics and Integrity, was recently charged with sectarianism over remarks prosecutors allege were capable of promoting hatred and hostility against members of the Banyankole tribe.

The outspoken politician had been remanded to Luzira Prison following her earlier court appearance, prompting reactions from political supporters, activists and members of the public who viewed the case as politically significant given her long history of criticism against the government.

During proceedings today, court allowed Matembe to apply for bail and later ruled that she be released upon payment of Shs3 million cash. Her sureties were also approved by the magistrate as part of the bail conditions.

The ruling sparked excitement among supporters who had gathered both inside and outside the court premises throughout the day waiting for the decision.

However, attention quickly turned to the race against time, with supporters expressing concern over whether the required money and documentation would be processed before prison authorities close admissions and releases for the evening.

Some supporters immediately launched efforts to mobilise funds while others prayed for a quick completion of the procedures to ensure Matembe walks free today.

Matembe is widely respected for her contribution to women’s rights advocacy and governance debates in Uganda. Once a senior figure within President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, she later broke ranks with the government and became known for her fearless criticism of corruption, abuse of power and democratic decline.

Because of her influence and political history, the case continues to generate strong reactions across the country, with many Ugandans closely following every court appearance.

The matter was adjourned to a later date as investigations continue.
