LIRA CITY, UGANDA — May 5, 2026 — A night of football excitement in Lira City turned tragic after a prominent ruling party mobiliser collapsed and died moments after celebrating a goal.
Joe Ebong, popularly known as “Biggie,” the chairperson of the NRM Veterans League in the Lira city, died on Monday night after suddenly collapsing at a local video hall where fans had gathered to watch an English Premier League match.
Celebration turns fatal
Witnesses say Ebong had been in high spirits as Everton took control of the game against Manchester City. When Everton netted their third goal, he reportedly leapt to his feet in celebration—only to collapse seconds later.
“He stood up excited, cheering like the rest of us, then suddenly fell down,” one eyewitness recounted. “At first, people thought he had fainted, but he didn’t respond.”
Rush to save his life
Friends and fellow fans quickly rushed him to a nearby private clinic in Lira, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, sending shockwaves through those who had been watching the match with him.
Suspected heart attack
While an official medical report is yet to be released, individuals close to the deceased suspect he may have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, possibly triggered by the intense excitement. Others indicated he could have had an underlying health condition that went undetected.
Health experts note that although uncommon, extreme emotional reactions—including excitement—can trigger fatal cardiac events, particularly among individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.
A known political mobiliser
At the time of his death, Ebong was a key grassroots figure within the National Resistance Movement structures in Lira. Colleagues describe him as a dedicated cadre who played a central role in mobilising veterans and supporting party activities across the city.
“He was a committed leader who always brought people together,” a fellow party member said. “This is a big loss not just to the veterans, but to the entire community.”
Community in shock
News of his sudden death spread quickly across Lira City, prompting an outpouring of grief from residents, political leaders, and friends. Many described the incident as both shocking and heartbreaking, given the ordinary setting in which it occurred.
Ebong, aged 56, is remembered as a sociable and passionate football fan whose life ended in a moment of joy that turned into tragedy.
Beyond the incident
The incident has reignited discussion around silent health risks, especially among middle-aged Ugandans, where routine medical check-ups are often overlooked. It also highlights how everyday social settings—like football viewing centres—can quickly turn into emergency scenes when health crises strike.
As the community mourns, calls are growing for increased public awareness around heart health and emergency response preparedness in public places.
