Kampala, Uganda — The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has announced sweeping governance changes at the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, signaling a renewed push for accountability within Uganda’s energy sector.

In the latest developments, Board Chairperson Lydia Ochieng-Obbo has been removed from her position, while Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Paul Mwesigwa has been placed on forced leave.

According to the Ministry, the decisions are part of broader efforts to strengthen oversight, enhance operational efficiency, and improve service delivery in the country’s electricity distribution network.

The government further indicated that interim leadership has been instituted at UEDCL to ensure continuity of operations as the transition unfolds. Officials say the changes are expected to stabilize management structures and align the company’s performance with national energy objectives.

UEDCL plays a central role in Uganda’s electricity distribution, making the leadership shake-up a significant development for both consumers and stakeholders in the power sector.

More details regarding the interim appointments and the duration of the restructuring are yet to be disclosed.
