From Theatre to Stage: Dr Brian Buluke’s Journey Through Medicine and Music

Dr Buluke Brian, known to Music fans as Blue Tygar, is a Ugandan general surgeon and singer-songwriter who refuses to choose between the scalpel and the guitar. To his patients he’s “Doctor Brian.” To music lovers he’s “Blue Tygar” — the artist whose acoustic, soulful songs speak the things people often can’t say out loud in hospital corridors.

From Mbarara to KIU

Brian’s medical journey began at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, where he earned his MBChB[Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery] between 2013 and 2018, specializing in Surgery and Pediatrics. Even as a student he was known for balancing ward rounds with songwriting. While in second year in 2014 he wrote his gospel track _“Lift Me Up”_ — a prayer for strength through difficult seasons.

Today he’s completing his training as a General Surgeon at Kampala International University School of Health Sciences, with graduation set for 13th June 2026. At KIU he’s training at KIU Teaching Hospital and Research, the same institution that leads Uganda’s largest free surgical camps in partnership with the Association of Surgeons of Uganda and Ministry of Health. The hospital provides specialized services including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Gynaecology — the kind of environment where Brian is sharpening the skills he’ll take into the next chapter of his career.

The music: Blue Tygar

Music came first. Brian wrote his first song _“Twekolere”_ while in Primary 6. He never stopped. As Blue Tygar he’s released 15 songs across gospel, RnB and acoustic genres, sung in multiple languages. His album _Lift Me Up_ includes tracks like _Topapa, Dry Season, Gwenonze_, and his trending single _“Wantegera”_.

He’s performed at major events while still in medical school: Eddy Kenzo’s 10-year concert, Spice Diana’s _Ndi Mu Love_ show, and Jose Chameleon’s Sabasaba. One unforgettable night he filled Adit Mall for his _Lift Me Up_ concert. For Brian, the stage and the operating theatre demand the same thing: focus, precision, and respect for what’s in your hands.

Healing beyond the OR

Even as a student, Brian believed medicine had to be accessible. He owns Lanz Clinic near MUST, where students and community members access care at affordable prices. That same philosophy follows him to KIU: healthcare only works when people understand it and can reach it.

At KIU-THR, surgeons and teams are addressing severe surgeon shortages and limited resources across Western Uganda through surgical camps and partnerships. Brian is stepping into that gap. His goal as a General Surgeon is to provide skilled, compassionate care where it’s needed most, train junior doctors, and help close Uganda’s surgical access gap.

Two names, one mission

Colleagues at KIU describe him as the student who stays late to teach suturing, who explains procedures to patients in plain language, and who brings calm when cases get complicated. Fans describe him as the songwriter who gives voice to fear, hope, and resilience.

Brian doesn’t see a contradiction between surgery and songwriting. Both are about restoration. A surgeon restores function. A songwriter restores hope. Both require listening — to the body, to the silence between notes, to the person in front of you.

On 13th June 2026, when he graduates from Kampala International University, it will be more than a degree. It will be a win for every student told they had to pick one dream. Dr Buluke Brian chose discipline. Blue Tygar chose expression. Together, they’re one mission: to help people feel whole again.
