Israel Launches Pre-Emptive Strike on Iran

The government of Israel has launched what it described as a “pre-emptive military operation” against Iran, triggering multiple explosions in the Iranian capital, Tehran, and sharply escalating tensions across the Middle East.

Explosions were reported in central and northern districts of Tehran early Saturday, with thick plumes of smoke rising above parts of the city. Iranian state media acknowledged blasts but did not immediately provide details on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.

In Jerusalem, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation, stating that the strikes were intended to neutralize what he described as “immediate and credible threats” to Israeli national security.

“We will not wait for threats to materialize,” Katz said in a televised briefing. “The safety of Israeli citizens is non-negotiable.”

Air raid sirens sounded across several Israeli cities shortly after the announcement, and authorities declared a state of heightened alert. Schools were closed in multiple districts, and civilian air traffic was temporarily suspended as security forces prepared for possible retaliation.

Iranian officials condemned the strikes as a violation of sovereignty and warned of consequences.

A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry described the attack as “an act of aggression” and said Tehran reserves the right to respond “at a time and place of its choosing.”

The attack comes amid months of rising hostilities between the two regional adversaries, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program and its support for armed groups across the region. Diplomatic efforts to revive nuclear negotiations have stalled, and military rhetoric has intensified in recent weeks.

Regional governments and global powers have called for restraint, warning that further escalation could destabilize an already volatile region.
