Fresh Fear as NUP’s Ninye Tabz Is Allegedly Abducted by ‘Drone’ Operatives in Kamwokya

KAMPALA — Opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned the alleged abduction of its supporter, Ninye Tabz, by unidentified security operatives in Kamwokya, warning of what it calls a renewed crackdown on opposition activists.

Reports circulating among party supporters indicate that Ninye Tabz was forcefully taken away on Wednesday by armed men traveling in an unmarked Toyota Hiace van, locally referred to as a “drone.”

The alleged incident has triggered outrage within NUP circles, with party leaders accusing security agencies of returning to tactics that previously drew criticism from local and international human rights organizations.

Several opposition supporters and activists took to social media demanding the immediate release of Ninye Tabz, whose whereabouts remained unknown by Wednesday evening.

NUP officials argue that the continued use of unmarked vans and covert arrests undermines public trust in law enforcement institutions and creates fear among citizens, especially politically active youth.

The term “drone” became common in Uganda during the tense period surrounding the 2021 elections, when numerous opposition supporters reportedly disappeared before later resurfacing in detention centers and military courts.

Human rights defenders have repeatedly called for transparency and accountability in security operations, warning against unlawful detentions and enforced disappearances.

Security authorities have in the past denied involvement in illegal abductions, insisting that all suspects arrested during operations are handled within the framework of the law.

As pressure mounted on Wednesday night, NUP leaders demanded that authorities disclose the whereabouts of Ninye Tabz and ensure his immediate release or formal presentation before court.
