KAMPALA — City businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia has donated Shs50 million to the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in support of chimpanzee conservation and animal welfare efforts.

The sanctuary also honored the memory of Sudhir’s late son, Rajiv Ruparelia, by naming one of the chimpanzees after him during the visit.

According to officials at the sanctuary, the contribution will support the care of rescued chimpanzees, including feeding, medical treatment and maintenance of the island facility located on Lake Victoria.

Ngamba Island serves as a refuge for orphaned chimpanzees rescued from poaching, illegal trafficking and habitat destruction. Conservationists say the sanctuary continues to face growing operational costs amid increasing pressure on wildlife habitats across the region.

Sudhir and the Ruparelia Foundation have been among the private supporters of the sanctuary over the years, contributing toward conservation activities and welfare programs for rescued animals.

Rajiv Ruparelia, who passed away in a road accident in May last year, was one of Uganda’s best-known young entrepreneurs and served as Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group. He was widely recognized for his involvement in business, sports and youth empowerment initiatives.

The symbolic naming of the chimpanzee “Rajiv”6 was described as a tribute to his legacy and the family’s continued connection to conservation work in Uganda.
