Tanzania and Uganda have signed a $20 billion deal with Vitol Bahrain to build a major oil refinery at Port Tanga, Tanzania, marking a significant development for East Africa’s energy sector.

The project is expected to strengthen the region’s refining capacity, energy security and petroleum infrastructure, while positioning Tanzania as an increasingly important energy hub.

For Uganda, the deal further deepens its growing energy partnership with Tanzania, particularly as the two countries work together on major oil and pipeline projects.

The investment could also create opportunities for job creation, trade and regional economic growth, while reducing East Africa’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
