A 45-year-old man from Ntungamo District has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly defiling his seven-year-old biological daughter.
Wellen Kukundakwe, who works as a metal fabricator at Rwamabondo trading centre, was handed the long jail term on May 11, 2026, by High Court judge Lawrence Tweyanze Karikwisya.
The incidents happened in November 2022 when the child's mother had left the family home after a domestic disagreement, leaving the young girl in her father's care. The victim, now 10 years old, told the court that Kukundakwe called her to his bed on several occasions and defiled her as many as 10 times.
The girl later confided in a neighbour called Tumwesigye, who took her to the police station and made sure she received medical help. Kukundakwe was arrested and charged with aggravated defilement shortly after the report was made.
While delivering the sentence, Justice Tweyanze strongly condemned the crime, saying it was a serious betrayal of a father's duty to protect his child. He remarked that what Kukundakwe did could only be done by an animal and not a human being, adding that if he could commit such acts against his own daughter multiple times, one can only imagine what he could do to others.
The defence had asked the court for a lighter sentence, arguing that Kukundakwe is a father to other children and had already spent significant time on remand. However, the judge ruled that the aggravating factors far outweighed any mitigating circumstances.
After deducting the time he had already spent in prison awaiting trial, which is about three years, Kukundakwe will serve an effective sentence of 46 years, three months and 20 days.
This case has once again highlighted the vulnerability of children, especially girls, when domestic conflicts force mothers to leave the home, leaving them exposed to abuse by people they should trust the most. Defilement cases involving family members continue to be a worrying trend in many parts of Uganda.
