Pretoria-Economic Freedom Fighters Party leader Hon Julius Malema has sent shockwaves across the country after launching a fierce and deeply personal attack on Magistrate Twanet Olivier following his sentencing to 5 years direct imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Speaking outside court to a massive crowd of supporters, Malema didn’t hold back — escalating tensions from a legal battle into a full-blown political confrontation.
He described Magistrate Olivier as a “racist of note”
Claimed she could be aligned with AfriForum
And in a moment that stunned many, reportedly referred to her as “ugly”, sparking outrage and debate across the country
Malema also questioned the fairness of the judgment, arguing that the punishment does not match the act:
“No sober judge will ever agree that a person shoots one bullet and is then sentenced to five years.” Malema Told Jubilant supporters
Outside the court, tensions were already boiling. Supporters gathered in large numbers, chanting and showing defiance, while confrontations with figures linked to AfriForum raised fears of further clashes.
Now South Africa finds itself sharply divided:
- Some believe this is political targeting of a powerful opposition leader
- Others say Malema’s comments are a dangerous attack on the judiciary and undermine the rule of law
The situation has quickly turned into more than just a court case — it’s now a national political flashpoint that could have serious consequences if tensions continue to rise.
Do you think Malema is exposing injustice… or has he gone too far attacking the court? Let’s hear your view in the comment section
