Commonwealth Lawyers Association Condemns UPDF Over Arrest of Erias Lukwago

KAMPALA — The Commonwealth Lawyers Association has strongly condemned the actions of the Uganda People's Defence Forces following the recent arrest of prominent Ugandan lawyer Erias Lukwago, warning that the military’s conduct poses a serious threat to the rule of law and constitutional governance in Uganda.

In a strongly worded statement, the association expressed concern over what it described as increasing interference by security agencies in the work of legal practitioners and opposition figures. The lawyers’ body said the arrest of Lukwago raises critical questions about respect for due process, judicial independence, and the protection of legal professionals carrying out their duties.

The association further warned that the continued involvement of military authorities in civilian legal and political matters undermines democratic principles and weakens public confidence in state institutions.

“The rule of law depends on the independence and protection of lawyers to represent clients without intimidation or unlawful interference,” the statement noted, while calling on Ugandan authorities to uphold constitutional rights and international legal obligations.

The development adds to growing criticism from local and international rights groups over the handling of opposition leaders, lawyers, and activists in Uganda amid heightened political tensions.

Lukwago, who also serves as the Lord Mayor of Kampala, has in recent months faced several confrontations with security agencies linked to his political activities and legal representation of opposition figures.
