Today, the name Isaya Yunge is suddenly everywhere in Kenya after his traditional engagement to Charlene Ruto, President William Ruto’s daughter.

 

But who exactly is this Tanzanian whose arrival has set social media on fire?

 

Yunge is a Tanzanian technology entrepreneur whose name had already travelled far beyond East Africa long before today.

 

He founded SomaApp, a platform created to help African students discover scholarship opportunities. He has also been associated with Kaya, an AI-powered smart speaker built around African data, languages and culture, as well as SomaFiti, a wearable technology project focused on health and wellbeing.

 

His résumé did not begin with Charlene.

 

In 2018, Yunge was selected for the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30, in the technology category. That same year, he was among the Tanzanians recognised through the Queen's Young Leaders programme, putting him in rooms and networks far removed from the ordinary startup scene.

 

And now, in 2026, he has entered one of Kenya's most politically prominent families.

 

That is where this story becomes bigger than a wedding.

 

For years, social media has sold young Africans a simple dream:

 

Get rich, become famous, meet the right person—and your life changes overnight.

 

But Yunge's story presents a different lesson.

 

By the time his name became connected to the Ruto family, he had already spent years building companies, developing technology and establishing an international profile.

 

So perhaps the real question is not:
